Everything Needed for Life and Godliness

2 peter 1:3 – His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. 4 – Through these he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, seeing that you have escaped the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires.

verse 5 – For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge, 6 – your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness, 7 – your godliness with brotherly kindness, and your brotherly kindness with love.

There is no other power source than that of Jesus Christ.  Can you imagine participating in the divine nature?  It’s hard to believe, yet that is what is promised to the faithful.  Did you see the list of what supplements the faith?  There are specific accompanying actions that are connected to faith and at the heart of those actions is kindness and love.  Peter goes on to say in verse 9 – For the person who lacks these qualities is blind and shortsighted, and has forgotten the cleansing that he has received from his past sins.

There’s no way to hold on to both the divine nature and evil desires.  We’ve got to let go of the evil desires in order to lay hold of the promised divine nature.  There is no power to do this apart from Jesus Christ.  The requirement for obtaining this power is knowing Jesus.

And this is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent – Jesus the Messiah – John 17:3.  Let’s take the time to get to know Jesus and He will give us everything we need for life and godliness here and for eternity – for this was the very reason why He came to this earth in the first place!  And what’s more, He completed the task He was sent here to do.  Therefore Jesus has the authority to give eternal life to those who believe.  Jesus has the authority to give eternal life to you!  There are no promises greater or more precious than these.  Let’s consider their value and renew our decision and commitment today to lay hold of Jesus Christ!
