Into the Wilderness with Jesus

Into the Wilderness with Jesus

Mark 1:9 – Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10 – And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 – And a voice came from heaven: “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.”

verse 12 – The Spirit immediately drove him into the wilderness. 13 – He was in the wilderness forty days, enduring temptations from Satan. He was with wild animals, and angels were ministering to his needs.

John pushed Jesus into the water and for a few moments Jesus was completely surrounded by the deep. Then coming up out of the water Jesus looked up at the heavens and at that very moment the sky transformed from its tranquil pattern of sun and cloud to splitting apart with violent force.  What did that look like?  Did everyone else see what was going on in the heavens?  And then through the fractured heavens a tiny speck of something descended from the highest altitudes getting closer and closer and as it came clearer into view it appeared like a dove heading straight for Jesus.  As the Holy Spirit lighted upon Jesus a voice was heard booming through the heavens: “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.” Then the Holy Spirit sent Jesus into the wilderness where Satan was waiting to tempt Him.  But Jesus was not alone.  Angels were sent to take care of Jesus after He endured the temptations.

For a moment let’s close our eyes and plunge into the darkness and imagine Jesus.  Let’s talk to Him and listen.  May our consciousness split open with light from above and let the Holy Spirit light upon us and fill us with power.  Listen to the voice of God speaking through the Scriptures telling us “This is my one dear Son. Listen to him!” – Mark 9:7.  And then, guess what?  The Holy Spirit will move us to get up off our knees, or out of our beds, or out of the shower and get into the wilderness of the day where we will be tempted by Satan.  But do not fear.  Angels will be sent to take care of you.

Have a victorious day in Jesus!
