She Was Taken Out of Man

She Was Taken Out of Man

Genesis 2:20 – So the man named all the animals, the birds of the air, and the living creatures of the field, but for Adam no companion who corresponded to him was found. 21 –  So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he was asleep, he took part of the man’s side and closed up the place with flesh. 22 – Then the LORD God made a woman from the part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

Verse 23 – Then the man said, “This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 – That is why a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become a new family. 25 – The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.

After having spent time that day naming the animals and searching for a creature that bore some familiarity with himself Adam woke up  and found her!  God had to make Adam drowsy.  Adam had not grown tired – this brand new world was filled with so much to discover!  And he was filled with boundless energy!  As he named the animals he noticed that animals had males and females – similar, yet different – and there was no creature to be found that corresponded with himself – like him but different.

God waited for the right time to make Adam sleep and while he slept God performed a kind of surgical amputation, removing a part, a rib and then closing him back up.  With that part he made a woman.  God caused Adam to awaken and then Adam instantly found what he had been looking for – for God had brought her to him.  I can only imagine the look on Adam’s face when he beheld Eve for the first time – She is like me – “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh”  But she is different.  She is not a man.  “This one will be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”

This is our origin story and our pattern.  A new family is made when a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife.  They are unashamed to be naked in each other’s presence.  In this manner they receive the intended blessing of God and are ready to love, bear fruit and multiply children to the glory and honor of God who created them.
