Creatures of Water and Sky

Creatures of Water and Sky

Genesis 1:20 – God said, “Let the water swarm with swarms of living creatures and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” 21 – God created the great sea creatures and every living and moving thing with which the water swarmed, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good. 22 – God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” 23 – There was evening, and there was morning, a fifth day.

Here on day five of creation the first day of three days of blessings occurs.  There was no blessing announced in the first four days – probably because there were no creatures yet, only vegetation being created on day three, but here, on day five, God created the first living creatures: the specialists of water and sky.  God blessed them.

What does it mean to be blessed?  To be blessed means they are capable of giving God adoration.  These are the first creatures endowed by God with varying levels of intelligence.  Just look up sea creatures like dolphins or study the birds used in falconry to see the bonds that these creatures can have with humans – and if they can form these bonds with humans imagine the connection they have with God!  There is another part to this blessing and that is the blessing of reproduction – these creatures can quickly  multiply their numbers to fill their environments.

Today we are in the middle of a snow storm, but in the days leading up to the storm I could hear the honking of the Canadian geese and look up to see their great migrating chevrons carving a path through the skies.  There have been other massive groups of birds making their way through our area here in the Dakotas – huge dynamic swarms with their grand songs of praise to their Creator!

Imagine when there are multitudes of people!

After this I beheld, and, lo a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. – Revelation 7:9-10.

What an incredible sound that will be.  We were created and blessed to be part of that number.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
