Herod Heard About Jesus

Herod Heard About Jesus

Matthew 14:1 – At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus, 2 – and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.”

verse 3 – For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 – because John had repeatedly told him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

Herod had repeatedly ignored the voice of John the Baptist telling him his union with Herodias was unlawful – then on his birthday Herodias manipulated him into killing John, effectively silencing his voice forever.  Until Herod heard about Jesus – the voice was back and now it had supernatural power.  Do you think he was more than a little afraid?

For if we deliberately keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins is left for us, but only a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that will consume God’s enemies. – Hebrews 10:26,27.  Herod might have felt like the flames were already lit and that judgment was coming.

Herod thought Jesus and John were almost one and the same because the message they preached was the same.  The power to be like Jesus is available to us today.  We can become the greatest evidence for the existence of Jesus when we choose to follow Him and invite Him into our hearts.

“And let us hold unwaveringly to the hope that we confess, for the one who made the promise is trustworthy. And let us take thought of how to spur one another on to love and good works…” (Hebrews 10:23, 24) so that when people hear about us and our message they will believe in Jesus and escape the coming judgment.
