Not By Sword or Spear
1 Samuel 17:45 – But David replied to the Philistine, “You are coming against me with sword and spear and javelin. But I am coming against you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel’s armies, whom you have defied! 46 – This very day the LORD will deliver you into my hand! I will strike you down and cut off your head. This day I will give the corpses of the Philistine army to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the land. Then all the land will realize that Israel has a God 47 – and all this assembly will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves! For the battle is the LORD’s, and he will deliver you into our hand.”
It is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves! What an incredible truth about Jesus. One day all the world will realize that there is a God who does not save through human invention or skill. The battle is the LORD’s and all who believe in Him will be victorious. He is the Lord of hosts.
We can have the confidence of David if we desire it. Spend time with Jesus today. Talk to Him while tending to your daily responsibilities. Walk with Him in the pastureland and wilderness. Sing praises to Him even if you’re the only audience. Don’t forget your personal victories over the lions and the bears – and then before you know it God will call you to address the giants of the world to testify and demonstrate how powerless they really are when the Lord enters the battlefield.
Let’s face all our enemies and resist temptation in the name of the Lord of hosts. The battle belongs to Jesus and He will save us!
