Pagan gods are Nothing

Pagan gods are Nothing

Isaiah 41:21 – “Present your argument,” says the LORD, “Produce your evidence,” says Jacob’s king. 22 – “Let them produce evidence! Let them tell us what will happen! Tell us about your earlier predictive oracles, so we may examine them and see how they were fulfilled. Or decree for us some future events! 23 – Predict how future events will turn out, so we might know you are gods. Yes, do something good or bad, so we might be frightened and in awe. 24 – Look, you are nothing, and your accomplishments are nonexistent; the one who chooses to worship you is disgusting.

verse 25 – I have stirred up one out of the north and he advances, one from the eastern horizon who prays in my name. He steps on rulers as if they were clay, like a potter treading the clay. 26 – Who decreed this from the beginning, so we could know? Who announced it ahead of time, so we could say, ‘He’s correct’? Indeed, none of them decreed it! Indeed, none of them announced it! Indeed, no one heard you say anything!

verse 27 – I first decreed to Zion, ‘Look, here’s what will happen!’ I sent a herald to Jerusalem. 28 – I look, but there is no one, among them there is no one who serves as an adviser, that I might ask questions and receive answers. 29 – Look, all of them are nothing, their accomplishments are nonexistent; their metal images lack any real substance.

Remember Hezekiah?  How he prayed to be healed and the sign he received from God that his healing would happen was that the shadow would move backward 10 steps.  There is no other god that can move celestial bodies on a whim just for one of his servants.  I love the description in verse 23 – ‘do something good or bad, so we might be frightened and in awe.’  God unleashed the floodgates and wiped out the earth by water.  He parted the waters so Israel could cross the Red Sea on dry land – and this was after Egypt was ravaged with plagues.  What could the Egyptian gods do?  Nothing – all they had were man-made parlour tricks to give the illusion of power.  There was no real substance.

It’s the same today. Pagan gods can predict nothing; their arguments are empty; their evidence is lacking.  Their human handlers pull the strings in the background but their prophecies are vague and constantly change.  Beware!  Their illusions and deceptions have become more sophisticated and appear more realistic than ever.  They put on a show of power but accomplish nothing.

Wait for Jesus – When He returns according to the prophecies of the Bible – which have not failed – It will be a demonstration of power unlike anything this world has ever seen.  The world will be frightened and in awe.  Their pagan gods will dissolve to nothing and blow away in the force of His arrival. All their loud theories will fall silent.

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God… – Job 19:25-26.
