Circumstances of Our Call

Circumstances of Our Call

1 Corinthians 1:26 – Think about the circumstances of your call, brothers and sisters. Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. 27 – But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world think weak to shame the strong.

verse 28 – God chose what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, 29 – so that no one can boast in his presence. 30 – He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 – so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

There are deceptive forces in the world who claim to know all that is needed for health, happiness, and security.  They demand our money, our attention, and our obedience – and so many are lulled into a false sense of security, boasting in their accomplishments – But God will set these things aside and regard them as nothing in favor of those who are low and despised.

Look at verse 30 again:  God is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.  Without God there would be no provision made for our salvation – we would be utterly lost.  The more impossible our lives seem in our eyes, the more brightly God shines as He calls the lowest and most wretched among us to demonstrate His love and power.

The verses advise us to think about the circumstances of our calling.  Were we called because we were talented or good looking or smart?  Think again. God doesn’t call us according to any human standard.  So, if he didn’t call us because of our gifts then he must have called us because we needed saving.

We are so lost and incapable of saving ourselves that there is absolutely no reason to boast in ourselves.  Our salvation, our future, our hope is only possible because God made a way for us to know Him through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.  Let’s boast in the Lord who has called us with His good news of hope!   Let’s boast in Him who can save to the uttermost.  Let’s boast in Him who specializes in redeeming ‘impossible cases.’ Let’s boast in Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light!
