Led by the Star

Led by the Star

Matthew 2:7 – Then Herod privately summoned the wise men and determined from them when the star had appeared. 8 – He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and look carefully for the child. When you find him, inform me so that I can go and worship him as well.”

verse 9 – After listening to the king they left, and once again the star they saw when it rose led them until it stopped above the place where the child was. 10 – When they saw the star they shouted joyfully.

I have a terrible sense of direction.  I remember how thrilled I was when I first obtained a working GPS on my phone.  Finally there was an alternative to following handwritten notes or road atlases to get to where I needed to go.

One of the unusual things about this unique star the wise men had identified and followed is that it moved along a course outside of the charted paths of planets or constellations.  Over Jerusalem the star set and then after they left Herod the star rose again and continued to move until it stopped over where baby Jesus was located.  The wise men were literally following a GPS in the skies – no need for electronics!

God has given us another method of finding our position in the world and in time.  It is called the Bible.  With the help of the Holy Spirit we can accurately determine where where are in history, what to expect in the future, and how to follow the directions to God’s kingdom left behind for us.  Many like Herod prefer to have others do the searching for them but will miss out on the joy of finding Jesus for themselves.

God provided the star that led the wise men to Jesus.  God has provided the Bible that leads wise folk to Jesus today.  Let’s prayerfully open its pages and search for ourselves to find the directions to Jesus and His kingdom today!
