They Saw His Star

They Saw His Star

Matthew 2:1 – After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, in the time of King Herod, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem 2 – saying, “Where is the one who is born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 – When King Herod heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Check out these verses in Isaiah 13 – Look, the LORD’s day of judgment is coming; it is a day of cruelty and savage, raging anger, destroying the earth and annihilating its sinners. Indeed the stars in the sky and their constellations no longer give out their light; the sun is darkened as soon as it rises, and the moon does not shine. I will punish the world for its evil; and wicked people for their sin. I will put an end to the pride of the insolent, I will bring down the arrogance of tyrants. I will make human beings more scarce than pure gold, and people more scarce than gold from Ophir. So I will shake the heavens, and the earth will shake loose from its foundation, because of the fury of the LORD who commands armies, in the day he vents his raging anger.  (9-13).

The news of both Jesus and impending judgment will be alarming to the Herods, the insolent, the tyrants and all the wicked sinners who follow them.  There is wisdom in looking up!  Psalms 8:3 says – When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made, and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place, 4 – Of what importance is the human race, that you should notice them? Of what importance is mankind, that you should pay attention to them, 5 – and make them a little less than the heavenly beings?…

Jesus said in Luke 21:25 – “And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves. 26 – People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 – Then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 – But when these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

The wise men saw the star of the King of the Jews, Jesus Christ, because they were looking up at the heavens and they saw something different.  They saw a star that didn’t belong to any constellation and since only God could set the stars in place they concluded that this star was the sign they had long looked for and began to follow it.  They stopped in Jerusalem and inquired if there were any others looking for the newborn King and found no one.  They looked up again to find the star and followed it until they found and worshiped the King of kings.

Let us learn from the wisemen and look up at the same heavens today.  Let’s  praise God for His handiwork, and know that Jesus has proclaimed the end from the beginning.  Nothing that happens in this world will catch Him off guard for He has already seen it and is actively shaping events on earth and in heaven in preparation for His soon return.

Come and worship!  Come and worship! Worship Christ the returning King!
