Harvest of Eternal Life
John 4:31 – Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 – But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 – So the disciples began to say to one another, “No one brought him anything to eat, did they?” 34 – Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.”
Jesus had just changed the Samaritan woman’s life. He showed her that He knew everything she ever did yet still offered her the water of life. He revealed Himself to her as the Messiah and she threw the whole weight of her faith upon Him. The collective joy between the pair was more than palpable. Physical hunger and thirst were forgotten by both as woman left her water pot to tell her story to everyone and Jesus explained to His disciples that He’d already eaten mysterious food unknown to them.
The disciples were clueless as to what Jesus meant so He explained that His food was to do the will of His Father and complete His work. Jesus wanted them to understand about entering the work as sowers and reapers. “The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together. For in this instance the saying is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.” – John 4:36-38.
Jesus had called the disciples to reap what they had not sown and enter into the joy of gathering fruit for eternal life. This was the mystery food that had Jesus ignoring His physical hunger. Instead of getting fat on physical food, let’s enter the work that Jesus came to complete for Jesus has said “look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest!” – John 4:35.
May our food be to do the will of God today! Let’s enter the evangelism labors of those who’ve gone before us, looking forward to the day when we will rejoice together with them in the harvest of eternal life!
