What’s Wrong With God?

What’s Wrong With God?

Jeremiah 2:1 – This message from the LORD came to me: 2 – “Go and announce to Jerusalem: ‘This is what the LORD says: “I remember the loyal devotion of your youth, your love as a bride. You followed me in the desert, in a land that was not planted. 3 – Israel was consecrated to the LORD, she was the first fruits of his produce. All who devoured her became guilty and disaster came on them,” declares the LORD.’”

verse 4 – Listen to this message from the LORD, you descendants of Jacob and all the families of the descendants of Israel. 5 – This is what the LORD says: “What did your ancestors find wrong with me that they left me, and pursued worthless things, and so they became worthless?”

That is a huge question! What is it that we find wrong with God why we choose to leave God to worship worthless things like stuff and self? I’m sure we can put together a long list of things we want to blame God for: hunger, thirst, sickness, pain, death of loved ones…just to name a few. But we end up doing the same things the Israelites do!

Here are God’s observations: Jeremiah 2:11 – has a nation ever changed gods when they aren’t even gods? But my people have exchanged their glory for that which does not profit. 12 – Heavens, be appalled at this, be shocked, be utterly devastated,” declares the LORD. 13 – “Indeed, my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and they dug cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”

Why is it, in our disappointment in God – we end up choosing alternative things that cannot help us? – then we end up even more disappointed and discontent with the discovery that our alternatives won’t give us the lasting satisfaction we’re craving. Look further at the end of chapter 2:35 – you say, ‘I’m innocent. Surely his anger has turned away from me.’” “I’m about to bring charges against you because you say,’I haven’t sinned.’ 36 – Why do you go about changing your mind so much? You will also be disappointed by Egypt, just as you were disappointed by Assyria. 37 – You will also go out from this place with your hands over your heads. For the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you won’t prosper through them.”

The cure for all this is found in God Himself – He says in Jeremiah 3:22 – “Turn back, unfaithful people, and I’ll heal your unfaithfulness.”

If we’re angry at God for something we think He’s caused or allowed to happen – leaving Him for false gods is not the answer – it only leaves us worse off than before. Let’s turn back and let Him heal our unfaithfulness. Let Him forgive us our sins. Let Him heal our hurts and fill us with His living water. It’s the only answer that makes sense. Let’s take our anger of God to the cross and look upon Jesus Christ, the innocent Son of God and ask the same question: Why did God allow this to happen to His Son? – Let God give you the answers you need to strengthen you in your time of pain.

One day soon, the following promise will come true – let’s be faithful to see and experience its fulfillment: Revelation 22:1 – Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal. It was flowing from the throne of God and the lamb. 2 – Between the city street and the river, the tree of life was visible from each side. It produced twelve kinds of fruit, each month having its own fruit. The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

Verse 3 – There will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and the lamb will be in the city. His servants will worship him 4 – and see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 – There will be no more night, and they will not need any light from lamps or the sun because the Lord God will shine on them. They will rule forever and ever.
