Jonathan’s Advocacy

Jonathan’s Advocacy

1 Samuel 19:4 – Jonathan spoke to his father Saul favorably about David. “The king shouldn’t wrong his servant David because he has not wronged you and because what he has done has been very beneficial for you. 5 – He risked his life and struck down the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a spectacular deliverance for all Israel. You saw that and rejoiced, so why would you do wrong and shed innocent blood by killing David without cause?”

verse 6 – Saul listened to Jonathan, and swore by the life of the LORD that David would not be killed. 7 – Jonathan summoned David and told him all this. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and David served him as before.

For a brief moment of time father and son were in agreement about David. David had not done anything wrong to Saul; he risked his life before Goliath; and the LORD was responsible for an amazing victory. Through Jonathan’s intercession, David was able to return to serving Saul as he had done before.

Contrast Saul and Jonathan with God the Father and God the Son. Jonathan was David’s advocate before his father Saul. Jesus Christ is our advocate before God the Father. The Fathers, however, are vastly different. Saul had turned away from God and was more often at odds with his son, Jonathan. The beauty of Jesus’ advocacy on our behalf is that Jesus and His Father are always in agreement.

Check out these verses: 1 John 2:1 – My little children, I’m writing these things to you so that you might not sin. Yet if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus, the Messiah, one who is righteous. 2 – It is he who is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world’s.

We have the best friend of all in Jesus Christ who offers to us the gift of abiding in Him – so that we may live in the same way He Himself lived. Here are some more verses from 1 John 2 continuing with verse 8 – On the other hand, I am writing to you a new commandment that is truly in him and in you. For the darkness is fading away, and the true light is already shining.

Verse 9 – The person who says that he is in the light but hates his brother is sill in the darkness. 10 – The person who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no reason for him to stumble. 11 – But the person who hates his brother is in the darkness and lives in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 12 – I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

It didn’t take long before Saul revealed that he was still in darkness. He hated David and tried, once again, to kill him. Let us seek to continually abide in Jesus Christ and love each other, even our enemies, according to His command and His ability. We may slip and fall along the way, but let us always trust in our Advocate, Jesus Christ, who has guaranteed us forgiveness through His blood.
