David’s Complicated Life

David’s Complicated Life

1 Samuel 18:28 – As Saul continued to observe, he realized that the LORD was with David and that Saul’s daughter Michal loved him. 29 – Then Saul was even more afraid of David, and Saul was David’s enemy from that time on.

Verse 30 – The Philistine commanders would go out to fight and whenever they did, David was more successful than any of Saul’s other leaders. His name was held in high esteem.

What did Saul observe? He observed that David was unstoppable, untouchable, and unbeatable because the Lord was with him.

Saul had already tried to pin David to the wall with his spear twice out of fear of what David would become because of his success and fame. So Saul decided to take a different approach. In 1 Samuel 18:17 – Saul told David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I’ll give her to you as a wife. Just be an excellent soldier for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” Now Saul told himself, “I won’t harm him myself. Instead, I’ll let the Philistines harm him.” – 1 Samuel 18:17. Saul then changed his mind and gave Merab to someone else. He then offered his other daughter Michal to David for the bride price of 100 Philistines foreskins, again with the same thought that “he would cause David to die at the hand of the philistines. – 1 Samuel 18:25.

Saul tried to use his daughters to entice David to take additional risks on the battlefield and even assigned David the seemingly impossible task of slaughtering 100 philistines, committing circumcision on their corpses and bringing back the evidence – hoping that David would fall in battle. Instead of dying, David brought back 200 pieces of evidence.

Ever since David’s victory over Goliath, his life was filled with challenges on and off the battlefield. God was saving David’s life from the Philistines and from King Saul. His only relief was from His best friend Jonathan.

Sometimes our lives can seem to be just as complicated as David’s; facing spiritual threats outside the home and inside the home. It is a constant challenge trying to navigate difficult relationships with wisdom and love. As we step out onto life’s battlefield today, let us ask our best friend, Jesus Christ, to be with us.

Please consider these verses: 2 Peter 1:3 – His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. 4 – Through these he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, seeing that you have escaped the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires.

Verse 5 – For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge, 6 – your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness, 7 – your godliness with brotherly kindness, and your brotherly kindness with love.

Verse 8 – For if you possess these qualities, and if they continue to increase among you, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in attaining a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah.

  1. Thank you for this.
What you say is true, it is often very difficult to navigate difficult relationships while remaining true to the person involved and true to oneself – therefore true to God.
I hope to learn this some day. Soon.
