Abram’s Shield and Reward

Abram’s Shield and Reward

Genesis 15:1 – Some time later, a message came from the LORD to Abram in a vision: “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield. Your reward will be very great.”

We can claim the same promise today. It is written throughout the Scriptures: Proverbs 30:5 says: “Everything God says is pure; he is a shield for those who take refuge in him.”

Ruth 2:12 says: May the LORD repay you for your work, and may a full reward be given you from the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.”

For Abram, no reward was more significant to him than to have a child. Continuing in Genesis 15:2 we read: “…Lord God, what can you give me since I continue to be childless, and the heir of my household is Eliezer from Damascus?

Read those words again: Lord, God, what can you give me? Abram was rich. He had it all. All, except for one thing, a son and according to Abram he already had that figured out. We can be like that as well too. Assuming that God can only work within the bounds of reason and science, we forget that with God all things are possible.

Genesis 15:3 – Look! Abram said, “You haven’t given me any offspring, so a servant born in my house is going to be my heir.”

What has Abram assumed? Because he and Sarai haven’t achieved a pregnancy – then a servant born in his house would be the heir. There are times we assume that because God has not worked within a timeline of our understanding, we must take matters into our own hands, for after all, God has given us brains to figure things out right?

We may struggle with God’s timings and apparent delays and make mistakes along the way as Abram did – But let’s also let God speak as Abram did, and be open to correction.

Genesis 15:4 – A message came from the LORD to him again: “This one will not be your heir. Instead, the child who will be born to you will be your heir.” 5 – Then the LORD took him outside. “Look up at the sky and count the stars – if you can!” he said. “Your descendants will be that numerous.”

verse 6 – Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

How shall we be credited with righteousness? Galatians 3:6 says: In the same way, Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 7 – you see, then, that those who have faith are Abraham’s real descendants.

As it was for Abram, so it is for us. Let us choose today to believe in Jesus and the promise of his forgiveness and His second coming.

Jesus will be your shield through every attempt of the devil to derail your faith. Jesus will be your reward. The reward of everlasting life with Him.
